In October 2008 Pennsylvania legislature approved the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act (HICPA) requiring contractors to register with the Bureau General of Consumer Protection of the Pennsylvania Attorney General (Attorney General). The new law also requires that certain terms and language be used in contracts. Contractors will be required to bring their contracts into compliance and to register with the Attorney General by July 1, 2009.

In fact, fraudsters who operate scams targeting businesses are sometimes anything but what you expect. They can appear friendly, polite and professional in every way. What that means is that your misperceptions about fraud might make you a target.

Pittsburgh, PA– August 3, 2009 – Better Business Bureau is issuing a national alert today about phony debt collectors that are calling consumers nationwide and claiming that they have defaulted on a payday loan and will be arrested if they don’t pay immediately. Claiming to be lawyers, the scammers say they are with the “Financial Accountability Association” or the “Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans” and are equipped with a disconcerting amount of personal information about their potential victims.

BBB has become aware that the Car Allowance Rebate System is already attracting “unauthorized identity appropriation.” Web sites are popping up, falsely claiming that consumers need to register for the program. Some impostor sites ask for consumers' personal information including names, addresses and Social Security numbers. In some cases, the sites falsely promise that consumers will be put in touch with authorized dealers in their area.

Pittsburgh, PA July 2, 2009 — Through Tweets, e-mail and Web sites, job hunters are being told that they can make lots of money from the comfort of home using Twitter. Better Business Bureau warns that the large print for such offers may promise big returns but the fine print can cost them every month.
