The Federal Trade Commission has been bringing law enforcement actions involving deceptively marketed prepaid phone cards since the 1990s, most recently suing prepaid calling card distributors for deceiving consumers, especially immigrants and deployed soldiers, by misrepresenting the number of calling minutes provided by their cards, and failing to adequately disclose fees and charges associated with their cards.
BBB offers Prepaid Calling Card tips including how to avoid getting less minutes than you counted on, what hidden fees may be charged, and if the air time is international.
