Posted Employment Scams Hit Craigslist

Posted Wednesday, February 03, 2010

Craigslist is commonly used to find apartments, search for jobs, and sell or buy unwanted items. As the unemployed look for jobs, many are searching social networking sites, newspapers, and online postings. It has been brought to our attention that employment opportunity scams are surfacing on Craigslist.

Scammers are posting fake advertisements for employment opportunities and paid research trials. Once the consumer sends in their resume, they are told they need a background check or credit check. The scammers then direct the applicant to a website that is a scam used to steal their personal information. Craigslist has posted a disclaimer for anyone searching for a job warning them of this scam.

Always use caution when using social networking sites, newspapers, and online employment sites. Be sure to do your homework on the website you are visiting and the company you are applying to. If the employment opportunity sounds too good to be true, it normally is.

Thanks for your comment Josh! It's important to note that a lot of these advertisements use the names of well known companies to instill trust. If the posting seems questionable, directly call the company and ask if they are hiring for the position listed.

Thanks for sharing your story Marty. It's always important to do your homework on any company, whether it's before doing business with them or before applying for a job.

Thanks for the info, I applied for a joblisting the other day, got a "tentative offer of employment" today via email--which seems fishy considering they never interviewed me. The email contained no phone number to call and no company address, but a short description of the job and told me to follow the link so I could give them my credit report just "to verifiy my identity". Then they would send me another email, telling me where to go for my new-hire orientation... Thankfully, I've had close calls with scams before, and didn't follow the link. Of course, how could they offer me a job if they didn't interview me, in person of otherwise? Also, you do want to be careful on Craigslist with job ads that are too vague. On the other hand, there are a lot of legit job ads that are vague as well. It's really a matter of good judgement, no matter how desperate you for a job (cause believe me, I am desperate). Also, a lot of job ads don't tell you what the company's name is (and many of these are legit jobs--Craigslist should make it mandatory for people to put in the company names). The particular scam email I'm talking about said it was Budweiser USA--of course no local office info, no actual info--and the rep's name was Erica Johnson, just for those of you in the future who might encounter this. it's one to watch out for.

Something similar happenned to me this past month. The fake company was Canes Ultralights Inc. They got worse because they actually advertised the job in a local christian radio station in Texas. I was looking to see where had they done this before and i found out they had done it in New York in a news paper. I just wonder how many other people and in how many other states have they done this. Beware!
